Firetail Fly takes its name from the flash of a tigerfish’s tail and the stories shared around a campfire at the end of a long day on the water.
Built on decades of guiding experience, Firetail Fly was founded to offer anglers a truly exceptional African fishing adventure while protecting the wild places that make it possible.
We believe great fishing and responsible conservation go hand in hand. Our operations are designed to minimise our environmental footprint while supporting the long-term protection of Africa’s rivers, wildlife, and landscapes.

The Malagarasi River is one of Africa’s last truly wild river systems. Rising in the highlands of Burundi, it flows west through a vast and largely untouched wilderness before eventually reaching the shores of Lake Tanganyika.
Within Tanzania, the river winds through the great Moyowosi floodplain, one of the largest wetland systems in East Africa. Here the landscape shifts between open grasslands, papyrus swamps, and ancient miombo woodlands. Wildlife moves freely through this remote ecosystem, from sitatunga and hippo to countless bird species that depend on the health of the wetlands.
For anglers, the Malagarasi represents something increasingly rare in the modern world: a true frontier fishery. Vast stretches of river remain unexplored, offering the opportunity to pursue powerful tigerfish in a setting that feels unchanged for generations.
At Firetail Fly, our relationship with the Malagarasi extends far beyond fishing. Through daily river patrols and close collaboration with local partners, we are committed to protecting this remarkable ecosystem and ensuring that responsible tourism contributes to its long-term conservation.
Fishing here is more than just the pursuit of trophy fish. It is an opportunity to experience one of Africa’s last great wilderness rivers and to play a small role in safeguarding it for the future.

Set within the vast wilderness of southern Tanzania, the Nyerere Dam has quickly emerged as one of Africa’s most exciting new freshwater fisheries.
Located on the Rufiji River within the greater Nyerere National Park ecosystem, the dam has created a vast and largely unexplored body of water surrounded by some of the continent’s most remarkable wildlife habitat.
This immense landscape of flooded valleys, winding tributaries, and wooded shorelines provides ideal conditions for large predatory fish. Nutrient-rich waters and minimal fishing pressure have allowed fish populations to thrive, offering anglers the rare opportunity to explore a fishery still very much in its infancy.
For Firetail Fly, the Nyerere Dam represents a modern frontier. Vast stretches of water remain unfished, and every expedition carries the excitement of discovery.
Anglers can expect dynamic fishing across open water, river channels, and submerged structure while surrounded by the extraordinary wildlife that defines the greater Nyerere ecosystem.
As with all Firetail operations, our approach is built on small groups, responsible tourism, and a deep respect for the landscape in which we operate.
The result is a truly unique fishing experience that combines exploration, adventure, and the privilege of fishing in one of Africa’s most spectacular wilderness settings.
